We were waiting for a bus at a stop across from and elementary school in Sorrento. Many mothers drove up on motor scooters to drop of their children. Children as young as kindergarten age hopped of the back of the scooter and kissed mama goodbye for the day. Think of how quickly car pool would go if we could convince parents to arrive on motor scooters!
At dinner last night the whole group toasted dad; how touching when all raised a glass to Jim Stevens.
We are passing groves of olive trees and lemon trees - just glorious!
A Brief History
My father, Jim Stevens, as one of the soldiers of the 601st Tank Destroyers, was on active duty for the entire engagement of the North African Campaign and The European Theater of Operations in WWII - for over 4 years. He experienced 546 days of actual combat. While he fought at the Kasserine Pass and El Guettar in North Africa and then in France and Germany, it is the Italian Campaign that I have chosen to focus on. Jim has often said that he would have liked to return to Italy. For him it would have been a ritual journey allowing him to reconcile the brutality of the war he fought with the people, culture, beauty and history of the country that he also experienced. At 91, he cannot take that journey so I am taking it for him.

Every photo is more glorious than the one before! It looks like the weather is cooperating. I've learned so much about the Italian front from your blog. Miss you but enjoying the trip through your eyes.
ReplyDeleteAfter mom and dad viewed the blog and they had a big discussion as to who sang Back to Sorrento! Dad remembered every place and strategies that you are seeing.
ReplyDeleteKaren, every DAY is more glorious. We are heading to Anzio today where it might rain, but otherwise, sunny skies! I read several books in preparation for the trip but seeing the locations in person brings it all to light. Please give a "Ciao" to 2R for me. I am thinking of them. In the Abbey there was a mosaic completed with hexagons, trapezoids, rhombi, etc... I took many pictures for us to use to identify shapes :)
ReplyDeleteMaura E, I bought a music box that plays Back to Sorrento, such a pretty song. So glad to hear about dad; I'm eager to spend time with him to talk about what I'm learning.
